What is Fantom?

Fantom is an open-source, high-performance, scalable smart-contract platform. It is perhaps best known for its native currency "FTM", or Fantom token. Conceived by Dr. Ahn Byung Ik in 2018, Fantom aims to solve issues of scalability and transaction speed.

Fantom was designed with a primary purpose of executing peer-to-peer contracts using FTM. However, Fantom has since gone beyond merely being a digital currency and has given birth to a vibrant ecosystem of decentralized applications, particularly within the DeFi and NFT spaces. How does Fantom work?

Like many other cryptocurrency networks, Fantom’s infrastructure relies on smart contracts. These are autonomous contracts with agreement terms embedded directly into the code. Smart contracts eliminate the need for middlemen, automatically initiating execution once predefined conditions are satisfied, hence providing reliability and transparency.

Fantom is distinguished by a unique consensus mechanism called “Lachesis”, which enhances the traditional Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanisms. This asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (aBFT) consensus algorithm empowers Fantom to accomplish transactions at high speed and minimal cost. This makes Fantom well-suited for DeFi applications and other decentralized services. Thanks to its EVM compatibility, Fantom supports Ethereum-based token standards such as ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155.

How to Find Undervalued Tokens on Fantom
