What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is an Ethereum layer-2 rollup technology, developed by Offchain Labs, designed to improve the scalability and efficiency of Ethereum. Launched in May 2021, Arbitrum has become a prominent choice for Ethereum scaling solutions.

How does Arbitrum work?

Arbitrum, much like Ethereum, utilizes smart contracts. Arbitrum retains the functionality of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to write and execute smart contracts with the same level of complexity as on Ethereum, and deploy them on the Arbitrum network. Therefore, Arbitrum supports Ethereum tooling, libraries, and token standards, such as ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155.

One of the key features of Arbitrum is its unique “Optimistic Rollup” technology. In this system, transactions are executed off-chain in an "optimistic" manner, meaning that computations are assumed to be correct unless proven otherwise. The results are batched together and submitted to Ethereum as a single, compressed transaction. If there's a dispute about the correctness of the transactions, there's a challenge period where any observer can submit a proof to correct the transactions. This method reduces the load on the network and achieves fast and cost-effective transactions, while still leveraging the security guarantees of Ethereum.
