What is BNB Chain?

BNB Chain, formerly known as Binance Smart Chain (BSC), is a blockchain-based, decentralized platform which enables development and execution of smart contracts and decentralized applications (dapps). BNB Chain is most well-known for its native currency "BNB", which first originated as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network, but later migrated to its own network. BNB Chain was launched by the cryptocurrency exchange Binance in September 2020.

Much like other networks such as Polygon, BNB Chain was designed to be compatible with Ethereum, but be cheaper and offer faster transaction times than Ethereum. How does BNB Chain work?

The BNB Chain ecosystem has smart contracts - self-executing contracts with terms of agreement directly written into code - at its heart. Smart contracts remove the need for intermediaries by executing themselves automatically when certain conditions are met, providing transparency and reliability.

Like Ethereum’s EVM, BNB Chain also utilizes a Turing-complete system, known as the BNB Chain Virtual Machine (BVM). This allows developers to build dapps and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects with operations of arbitrary complexity, and then deploy these on the BNB Chain network. BNB Chain supports several Ethereum-like token standards, such as BEP-2, BEP-20, BEP-721, and BEP-1155.

Unlike Ethereum, which transitioned from a Proof of Work (PoW) to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, BNB Chain utilizes a hybrid consensus model called Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) coupled with Proof of Authority (PoA). This model involves a number of validators who produce blocks, confirm transactions, and are elected by BNB holders. The aim of this design is to achieve high transaction speeds and a shorter block time, enabling it to handle a large volume of transactions efficiently and cost-effectively.
